The ACT Government is using licence plate recognition within Gungahlin to crackdown on illegal parking in the suburbs. These cameras are vehicle mounted camera system which allows parking officers to capture and record images of parked vehicles to determine if they have overstayed the maximum time limits or if they are unlawfully and/or dangerously parked.
An infrared camera takes specific images of licence plates and a second camera takes colour photos of the vehicle. The images are then reviewed and registered owners of vehicles not adhering to parking signs or road rules are posted an infringement notice. Focus areas for the LPR vehicles include on-street parking areas around schools, in high pedestrian areas and in town centres.
Drivers identified as parking illegally by the Licence Plate Recognition camera system will be posted an infringement notice.
Some common instances where infringement notices have been issued in Gungahlin already is parking on the nature strip or in a position that blocks a footpath even when parked in a driveway. Footpaths must be kept clear at all times.
Examples of where it is illegal to stop or park your vehicle include:
- on a taxi rank or bus stop;
- in a no stopping zone;
- in a no parking zone (you can stop but not park);
- on a footpath or nature strip;
- on a traffic island, the median strip or plantation in a divided carriageway;
- in a loading zone unless you have an loading zone parking permit or the vehicle is specifically permitted to use the loading zone;
- across any passage, thoroughfare, entrance, driveway or foot crossing;
- so that any part of the vehicle overhangs any line marking or parking space or bay; and,
- anywhere other than in a marked bay in a car park marked into bays.
