ACT Policing is urging motorists to drive safely this Easter long weekend, with double demerits in place from the first instance on Thursday, 29 March until the last instance on Monday, 2 April.
ACT Policing’s Operation Safe Arrival will see high visibility and unmarked patrols targeting impaired drivers, driver distraction, fatigue and speeding.
Officer in Charge Traffic Operations, Station Sergeant Marcus Boorman said safety should be the utmost priority for everyone travelling over the holiday period.
“There will be a higher number of vehicles on the roads, so be patient, adhere to the road rules and make safe decisions. We want you to arrive at your destination safely.”
“If you are travelling interstate, make sure you take regular breaks every two hours and don’t get behind the wheel if you are fatigued.”
“Make sure you travel safely this Easter long weekend so you remember the holiday for the right reasons. Officers don’t want to deliver heartbreaking news to your loved ones.”
Double demerits apply to all speeding, seatbelt, riding without a helmet and mobile phone offences. An additional demerit point applies for all other traffic offences.
During the 2017 Easter long weekend, ACT Policing Traffic Operation members issued 246 Traffic Infringement Notices, with 105 for excessing speed. The highest speed recorded was 140 km/h in an 80 km/h zone.
