The ACT Government’s Flexible Bus service continues to grow with Gungahlin residents the next region to get access to this popular free local service.
“I am pleased to announce that from Wednesday 1 June 2016, the Flexible Bus service will offer Gungahlin residents who need it most a new way to get around town,” Minister for Transport and Municipal Services Meegan Fitzharris said.
“Seniors and people with a disability in Gungahlin will from 1 June have the ability to attend medical appointments, visit shopping centres and meet with friends and family in their local area. This is just another way that the ACT Government is making it easier for people to move around our city, and the services will continue to improve with the establishment of an integrated transport agency, Transport Canberra, on 1 July.
“Introduced in 2014, the service already provides free travel to a number of areas across the ACT including Belconnen, the Inner South, Woden, Weston and Tuggeranong. Over 26,000 boardings have been recorded and that number will continue to grow as the service is introduced into the rapidly developing Gungahlin region.
“The Flexible Bus service is more than a simple trip from one point to another. It is an opportunity to enhance social inclusion across Canberra. There are regular customers who use the service every week, including the oldest traveller who is 97 years of age. The social interaction the service provides is just as important as getting to and from appointments and activities.”
The Flexible Bus service picks passengers up from their home and takes them to their destination and then returns passengers home on weekdays.
Each bus is wheelchair accessible and is operated by a member of the special needs transport team.
The service complements other existing community transport services offered by community sector organisations.
To make a booking, passengers can call 6205 3555 from 9 am to 4 pm Monday to Friday or email [email protected]. Bookings must be made two days prior to travel.
