ACT Policing has issued a Traffic Infringement Notice (TIN) to a driver caught doing more than 45km/h over the speed limit late last night (Friday, 5 June).
At about 9pm, police detected a White Holden Clubsport with ACT Registration plates, travelling 180km/h south bound along Gungahlin Drive in Franklin.
The vehicle was stopped further down Gungahlin Drive just past Mitchell, with the driver issued a fine for $1811 and 12 demerit points, effectively losing their license.
Officer-in-Charge Gungahlin Police Station, Sergeant Rod Anderson was disappointed the message still isn’t reaching motorists.
“This reckless behavior puts lives at risk unnecessarily. I’m glad our officers were able to detect this dangerous driver and take them off our roads,” he said.
Traffic Operations Acting Superintendent Susie Ball said “this week the ACT had its sixth road fatality for the year where it is suspected speed was involved. The message from ACT and NSW Police is slow down and stay alert this long weekend, particularly if travelling to and from the snow”.
ACT Policing will be conducting targeted traffic duties this long weekend in the hopes of stalling our road toll. Police are also targeting driver distractions this month with a particular focus on mobile phones.
Double demerit penalties are in place for speeding and seatbelt offences, with an additional demerit point for all other offences until midnight Monday 8 June.
