Minister for Territory and Municipal Services, Shane Rattenbury, announced the completion of the spring tree planting program involving approximately 450 trees.
“Canberrans really value their trees and there is no doubt our trees add value to our city. Many Canberrans may not be aware of the investment made into our trees every year, and how well they are cared for,” Mr Rattenbury said.
“Approximately 450 new trees were planted throughout Canberra during spring. This work follows the planting of 650 trees planted across 69 suburbs in the ACT during the recent winter tree planting program. Both the winter and spring plantings will be maintained by contractors until handover to the ACT Government next autumn when weather conditions are cooler.
“The trees were planted along Canberra’s major arterial roads including Gungahlin Drive and Limestone Avenue, residential streets and in parks and reserves across 63 suburbs, including Latham, Farrer, Fadden and Ainslie.
“A mix of native and exotic trees were planted including Red spotted gums, Yellow box, Kurrajong, Liquidambar and Crepe myrtle. The trees have been chosen to complement the surrounding landscape and for their suitability in Canberra’s climate.
“While the primary goal of the tree planting programs is to replace trees that have been removed due to disease, hazard or age in streets, the new trees will also re-establish planting themes in parks and other areas of high recreational use.
“The ACT Government manages one of the largest urban forests in Australia, containing over 730,000 trees in the urban area, and this work reinforces the ACT Government’s ongoing commitment to the management of Canberra’s world renowned urban forest.”
