ACT Policing and the Gungahlin Marketplace are joining forces this weekend for Project Safe Plate, combatting number plate theft by providing free tamper-proof screws to motorists.
This Saturday (June 21) between 10am-2pm, motorists are encouraged to bring their vehicles to the Gungahlin Marketplace car park on the corner of Gozzard and Ernest Cavanagh Streets, where officers will fit tamper-proof screws on car’s number plates.
Officer-in-Charge of Gungahlin Police Station Donna Hofmeier said that she hopes to improve on City Stations results by doing more than 301 cars.
“City Station conducted Safe Plate in May, fitting more than 300 cars with the tamper-proof screws, which is a fantastic result, however we hope to do better than that. While it’s good and well to have some healthy competition between the stations, our aim is to stop thieves from stealing number plates and using them for criminal activity,” said Station Sergeant Donna Hofmeier.
“Registration plates are stolen by offenders as a precursor to other criminal activities, predominantly drive-offs from service stations and other crimes such as burglaries and the conveying of stolen property.”
“Fitting these special fasteners makes your registration plates less of a potential target for thieves and makes it harder for offenders to avoid police detection using stolen plates.”
The replacement of the screws will be conducted free of charge by ACT Policing officers, recruits and Volunteers in Policing at the location. The process takes a few minutes.
Project Safe Plate will be held across Canberra throughout the year. To find out when the project will be near you visit: http://www.police.act.gov.au/community/community-events.aspx
