Canberrans headed to the light rail launch on Saturday 20 April are encouraged to consider free Park and Ride to the City and Gungahlin.
Deputy Director-General Duncan Edghill said Transport Canberra is making it easy for people to get to and from the event hubs in the City and Gungahlin with free bus travel and expanded Park and Ride facilities throughout Canberra.
“We can all play our part to make the launch of light rail a celebration for Canberra rather than one of frustration and car congestion in the City, along the alignment and around the Gungahlin town centre,” Mr Edghill said.
“Park free and ride free via bus into the City or Gungahlin or better yet leave the car at home and catch a free bus all the way from 8am.
“The best option to travel one way on the light rail and catch a bus back to your car is the Park and Ride at GIO Stadium Australian Institute of Sport carpark, Braybrooke Street, Bruce where charter buses will drop you to and from the City or Gungahlin.
“Traffic conditions in the City and Gungahlin will change with road closures in place as well as significant crowd management throughout the alignment to keep Canberrans safe.
“Cyclists headed into the City or Gungahlin will need to lock their bikes up as the first day of light rail operations will be bike free to make it easy for Canberrans to get a space aboard.
“Bike cages and racks are also available at many Park and Ride facilities.
“Free Park and Ride facilities will operate from 8am inbound with the last departure from the City or Gungahlin at approximately 5pm returning you, your family and friends to your car or bike.
Mr Edghill said Canberrans can enjoy the first day of light rail by planning their journey using the online Transport Canberra Journey Planner, checking queue times on Transport Canberra social media channels and taking advantage of the expanded park and ride facilities with free bus travel.

Bruce – GIO Stadium, Battye Street
● Ride free – Charter service from the carpark to your choice of the City or Gungahlin and return
Southside park and ride:
Take the 300 Blue Rapid from Park and Ride at:
● Parkes – Treasury Building, Langton Street (bike friendly)
● Woden – Bus station, Matilda Street (bike friendly)
● Mawson – Athlon Drive (bike friendly)
● Wanniassa – Langdon Avenue/Rylah Crescent
● Tuggeranong – Bus station, Anketell Street (bike friendly)
Additional northside park and ride:
Belconnen – University of Canberra, College Street (bike friendly)
● Ride free – 300 Blue Rapid service from bus stop 4979 opposite Radford College to the City
