Canberra it is time to make the Griffins proud. They knew rail was in our future. This Saturday April 20, we will make light rail part of our history.

The ACT Government have pulled together 10 tips to make your launch day as smooth as a light rail ride.

1. Plan your day

Expect crowds and queues for light rail, plan how you will travel to the City or Gungahlin and ensure you are prepared to wait to hop aboard. Trips are one-way on launch day, so you will need to alight at the other end and wait again to return to the City or Gungahlin. All the info you need to plan your day is at www.transport.act.gov.au

2. Check the queue times online

Queue times will be updated every hour at www.transport.act.gov.au so you can plan your day on the day and pick when you head into the City or Gungahlin to experience your first light rail trip in Canberra.

3. Go public

Free public transport all weekend makes it easy to get from your door to a light rail platform in Gungahlin or the City ready for your first trip.

4. Park and ride

Extra Park and Ride places throughout Canberra combined with free travel all day across the network make it easy to get to the City or Gungahlin. Park and Ride in Bruce at GIO Stadium is the best option with shuttle buses to Gungahlin and the City, meaning you can park your car, travel the light rail in one direction and return to your car

5. Lock your bike up and ride

Bikes and light rail are great mates every other day. Just not on launch day. We are making it easy for people to get on and off light rail which means no bikes on board. You can ride into the City or Gungahlin and lock your bike up or to a Park and Ride with a bike cage or rack and catch a free bus.

6. Say no to Northbourne

Safety is key so we’ll close Northbourne Avenue between London Circuit and Barry Drive to create a safe space to queue. Travelling north or into the City find an alternate route like Gungahlin Drive or the Majura Parkway.

7. All aboard, just keep a lid on it

Keep a lid on drinks and food tucked away on board our shiny new light rail vehicles – no food or drink consumption is allowed on board but there are plenty of options when you arrive in the City or Gungahlin.

8. Donate that spare change

Bring your gold coins or be ready to make an electronic payment as you step off the light rail or head to the charity sausage sizzle. Hands Across Canberra is fundraising to provide grants to over 200 local community service organisations. Basically they help everyone they can so let’s help them.

9. Queues aren’t for you?

Plenty of opportunities to try light rail. The whole network will be free from 29 April for a month. There’s also free public transport on Sunday and light rail will run as normal from Monday 22 April with your MyWay card.

10. Stay safe and enjoy the day

Be prepared as facilities at stops are limited. We have more room for you to wait and will let most people on at the City or Gungahlin. Lots of people are helping to keep you and the crowds safe so follow directions and keep your eyes out for our friendly Light Rail Volunteers dressed in red.
