The National Broadband Network (NBN) is always a hot topic, but despite its notoriety many Australians are unaware of the consequences if they don’t connect once their premises is declared to be NBN-ready.
In fact, a recent survey conducted by comparison site finder.com.au found that a shocking 5.6 million Australians don’t actually care about the NBN, and have no idea of the repercussions of not connecting once their premises is declared ready.
Although NBN (the company in charge of building the network) has amped up its efforts to educate the public on the broadband network, many Australians are still perplexed by the techy jargon and frequent changes to rollout dates.
But despite public confusion and feelings of indifference, Aussies need to change their attitude towards the NBN and be aware of the issues that could arise so they don’t get caught out.
If your home or business does not migrate to the NBN 18 months after it is NBN-ready, your ADSL or Cable broadband and phone line will be cut off.
Between January and June 2017, we estimate that over 300,000 premises will face possible disconnection.
On top of this, Aussies could potentially end up paying more if they’re not careful. If you’re one of the 2.4 million Australians who are unaware whether their premise is NBN-ready, you may be drawn to some of the cheaper ADSL contracts currently available. Little do you know that this contract may overlap with when your home is able to connect to the NBN. In the end, you’ll end up losing both money and time trying to get out of your contract if better NBN alternatives are available.
The best way to avoid these potential roadblocks is to remain in the loop and make sure you know when your home will be NBN-ready. If you’re unsure, check out finder.com.au’s NBN tracker and look up your address.
Once you figure out when the NBN will be available at your house, you can start thinking about what Internet plans suit you.
Many of us can’t go a couple of hours without using the Internet, so before you tune out of talks on the NBN, save yourself some time and money and get properly informed.
