Traffic lights at the Barton Highway/Gundaroo Drive/William Slim Drive roundabout are now operational, helping to tackle congestion and improve safety at the busy intersection.
Federal Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Darren Chester said the introduction of signals on the roundabout would assist the traffic flow in peak hour.
“This is great news for Canberra. The roundabout’s new traffic lights are operational, the shared path bridge is open and additional approach lanes are now in use,” Mr Chester said.
“The upgrade will tackle congestion by significantly increasing the roundabout’s traffic capacity, the new traffic signals will operate 24 hours a day and the approaches carrying the heaviest peak-period traffic will be prioritised according to the time of day.
“Motorists will no longer need to make decisions on identifying gaps in the traffic flow, which is expected to significantly improve safety.”
ACT Minister for Transport and City Services Meegan Fitzharris said the Barton Highway roundabout upgrade would help manage increasing traffic volume due to new residents moving in to Gungahlin and Belconnen.
“Roundabout signalisation is an innovative approach already used in other Australian states, as well as in the United Kingdom, to improve safety and traffic capacity,” Ms Fitzharris said.
“The traffic lights will be in a testing phase over the next few days and will continue to be refined over coming weeks to achieve the most efficient operation and timing.
“An additional lane within the roundabout, as well as on each of its approaches, will also increase capacity and cater to the traffic growth generated from the developing Gungahlin region.
“Further minor works will continue through to February 2017 on the William Slim Drive approach and the completion of the third lane on the Barton Highway southbound approach to the intersection. We would like to thank road users for their patience as these important works are completed, along with other roadworks across Gungahlin, including the Gundaroo Drive and Horse Park Drive duplications.”
The $10 million project was funded under the Australian Government’s Roads to Recovery programme.
