Recently, educators and their children at the Communities@Work Family Day Care Playgroup located at Palmerston Community Centre were very fortunate in participating in a Dental Visit Program. The program is a free service to the community by the ACT Government (ACT Community Health Dental Program). A dental professional from the program came to playgroup and presented a small presentation to the educators with the focus on supporting oral health in children.
Topics covered in the presentation included; Importance of Teeth, Teething, Dental Check-ups, Dental Hygiene, Dental Development, Caring for Teeth, Diet for Good Oral Health, First Aid for Dental Accidents. The information that was shared encouraged the educators to be more aware and gain knowledge to be able to educate the children in their care and the families who access their care service. Educators were given written facts sheets to pass onto families and discuss with them on where families can access a free dental service for their children.
The children were given the opportunity to be interactive with the “Dentist” where small discussions took place about the importance of their teeth and how to take care of them. The session included the children learning and singing a familiar rhyme called “This is the way we brush our teeth”. The children were nicely surprised to meet one of the dental program’s mascots (a dinosaur with a full set of teeth!) and to help clean his teeth with a tooth brush. All children at the end of the visit received a toothbrush to take home.
This visit was a well worth visit and the feedback has be outstanding from our educators. A program such as this will still continue to be a highlight for future events at playgroup.
