Minister for Territory and Municipal Services, Shane Rattenbury, announced the completion of a $3.325 million project to upgrade public transport facilities around the Gungahlin Town Centre precinct.
“Since July 2013, work has been underway to deliver significant public transport infrastructure improvements around the expanding Gungahlin Town Centre precinct,” Mr Rattenbury said.
“The completion of the project is great news for Gungahlin and an important step towards improving public transport infrastructure across Canberra, in time for ACTION’s new Network 14, and the commencement of light rail.
“The Hibberson Street bus stops have been replaced with a major, 30 metre long station providing improved shelter and seating as well as the installation of new bike racks. The project has also installed digital information displays which will utilise the ACTION’s new NXTBUS real-time information system.
“In addition to the major bus station and associated facilities, the project has delivered two new bus stops on Hibberson Street near Hinder Street; a new bus stop on each side of both Anthony Rolfe Avenue (west of Gribble Street); and two new bus layovers (Kate Crace Street and Anthony Rolfe Avenue) which include driver facilities and parking bays for buses.”
Mr Rattenbury said the new major bus station will be able to accommodate up to four buses at once and will provide vital transport infrastructure for the area that will complement the delivery of light rail between Gungahlin and the City.
“Construction of the light rail system between the City and Gungahlin is due to commence in 2016, adding even more great transport infrastructure to the fast-growing Gungahlin region.
“Other significant public transport improvement projects currently underway include the Canberra Avenue Bus Priority project, the upgrade of Constitution Avenue and two new park and ride car parks in Gungahlin and Fyshwick. Together, these projects will help make Canberra’s public transport options more convenient and accessible.”
