The long-awaited new group centre at Moncreiff is a step closer with Woolworths Group being awarded the tender to develop the 24,740 square metre site at the corner of Horse Park Drive and Mirrabei Drive.

The Gungahlin development will bring shops, services and more homes to the growing community.

It will include a supermarket, retail and dining options, recreational facilities, and open green spaces, as well as up to 90 multi-unit dwellings and 16 affordable homes.

The design will be guided by the Design and Place Framework, which was shaped by community feedback gathered in 2021.

Sustainability is a key part of the project, which will feature a 7.5-star or higher NatHERS rating, rooftop solar, and electric vehicle charging points.

Woolworths said it would begin engaging in a comprehensive design review process with the Suburban Land Agency and the National Capital Design Review Panel on its proposal.

“We’re aiming to lodge our DA before the end of the year and from there we’ll work closely with the ACT Planning Authority towards a timely planning approval,” it said.

What the open, green space will look like.

Woolworths State Manager Property Development NSW & ACT Wesley Dose said the project demonstrated Woolworths’ ongoing commitment to serving the ACT community.

“Woolworths is excited to be involved in this project and extend our investment in the ACT,” he said.

“The Moncrieff Group Centre will support new, quality housing supply in the region and ensure a growing community has convenient access to fresh food and household goods.

“We look forward to working with the ACT Government and our partners to deliver the project and welcoming new residents and customers soon.”

The development will include 90 homes like these.

SLA CEO Adam Davey said the tender decision was a really exciting step forward for Moncrieff.

“We know how long the community has been waiting for this centre, and I want to thank residents for their patience and advocacy. This project is about delivering what locals have asked for – more services close to home, more green spaces and more opportunities to connect with each other.”

Mr Davey said the new group centre would deliver much more than just shops.

“It will be a vibrant, people-focused place where the community can come together,” he said.

“This centre will be a place where people can shop, meet friends, enjoy the outdoors and feel part of a connected, thriving neighbourhood.

“It’s about building a better future for Moncrieff – one that’s inclusive, sustainable, and community-driven.”
