Construction has now started on new outdoor fitness station at Yerrabi Pond District Park in Gungahlin.
“Construction has commenced to deliver two new outdoor fitness stations in Canberra’s north and south, which local residents helped to design as part of a community consultation in mid-2015,” Minister for Transport and Municipal Services Meegan Fitzharris said.
“Both sites will receive a sit up bench, seated rower, leg press, chest press, leg raise and dip bars, and the Gungahlin site will also receive an assisted pull up machine.
“This equipment will allow the community to undertake their preferred exercises which were identified as stretching (65 per cent), body pull ups and push ups (64 per cent), tricep dips (58 per cent), sit ups (56 per cent), rowing (53 per cent) and pull ups and leg raises (53 per cent).
“The site for both of the fitness stations was also selected by the community. The station at Yerrabi Pond District Park will be in a large open space to the north of the play equipment and at Eddison Park the station will be adjacent to the pedestrian path.
“These two parks are very popular among the local community and the new fitness stations will be a welcome addition, providing great infrastructure that will allow people to increase their activity levels. Over 70 per cent of respondents said the new equipment would encourage them to be more active, which is great.
“The ACT Government is committed to delivering a healthy, active and vibrant Canberra under the Healthy Weight Initiative.
“The Great Outdoor Gym Company has supplied the equipment and will manage the construction of the new fitness stations which is expected to take around four weeks to complete,” Minister Fitzharris concluded.
The new fitness stations will expand the ACT Government’s network of fitness equipment which is featured in 20 Canberra suburbs. Search for the outdoor fitness opportunities available near you at www.act.gov.au/outdoorfitness
