ACT Policing continues to urge motorists to drive safely or face harsh consequences after a 20-year-old man from Ngunnawal was caught speeding more than 50km/h over the limit yesterday (Monday, December 29).
About 4.40pm, a Traffic Operations member identified a Holden SS utility vehicle travelling on Gungahlin Drive, Aranda, at 142km/h in a sign-posted 90km/h zone.
The 20-year-old driver was issued with a Traffic Infringement Notice, a fine of $1811 and 12 demerit points.
Acting Officer in Charge Traffic Operations Station Sergeant Tracey Duck said the incident was a reminder that those who drive dangerously would be caught.
“Over the holiday period police are conducting high visibility patrols across Canberra, targeting dangerous driving behaviour including speeding and drink driving,” Acting Station Sergeant Duck said.
“With double demerits in effect until midnight this Sunday, motorists should think carefully about what it would mean to them if they lost their licence. More to the point, what it could mean if they or their loved ones were involved in a serious collision as a result of dangerous driving.”
“We continue to urge everyone in the community to think about road safety as their personal responsibility these holidays.” Double demerits have been in effect since Wednesday, December 24, 2014 and will continue until midnight Sunday, January 4, 2015.
