A 28-year-old Griffith man will face the ACT Magistrates Court this morning (Saturday, December 20) charged with common assault, arson and attempted arson after an incident in Amaroo yesterday.
Around 9.50am yesterday, police responded to an urgent request for assistance after the alleged offender was seen attempting to set fire to a Toyota Kluger parked in the driveway of the Amaroo home.
A man staying in the house approached the alleged offender, who then struck out at the victim, who fell to the ground. The alleged offender continued to set fire to the car, and using a rolled up newspaper then also attempted to set fire to the power box of the house.
Gungahlin General Duties patrols attended promptly, identified the alleged offender and took him into custody while ACT Fire & Rescue extinguished the fires. The Toyota was badly damaged in the incident.
The alleged offender was held in the ACT Watch House overnight and will appear in court this morning.
