Minister for Roads and Parking Mick Gentleman with Senator for the Australian Capital Territory Zed Seselja officially opened the northbound section of Majura Parkway, north of Fairbairn Avenue on Thursday.
“The opening of Majura Parkway’s northbound carriageway today, north of Fairbairn Avenue, was a major milestone for the Majura Parkway project which will greatly benefit Canberra commuters and visitors to the region,” Senator Seselja said today.
“This important investment in Canberra’s infrastructure was jointly funded by the ACT and Commonwealth governments and is the single largest ever road project undertaken in our nation’s capital.”
Minister Gentleman said motorists will now be able to benefit from the safety and time saving benefits the dual carriageway provides.
“It is important to realise, that this is more than just a road for the Canberra region, it’s another tool to continue growth and urban renewal,” Minister Gentleman said.
“Canberra is already seeing business vote with their feet, with the development of Eastern Broadacre and the arrival of IKEA are positive signs of the improved freight access with a finalisation of the ACT’s freight strategy anticipated later in the year.
“The Majura Parkway is forecast to carry around 40,000 vehicles a day including up to 6,000 trucks by 2030.
“Freight carriers will be able to take, once the Parkway is completed, a direct pathway through Canberra, which will encourage the regions diversification and economic expansion.
“People travelling north on the Majura Parkway can now drive the full length of the alignment, a milestone that has been greatly anticipated since construction commenced in 2013.
“While people have been able to use the section of road north of Tambreet Street since earlier this year, the advantage of being able to use the full length up to the Federal Highway will be felt by commuters immediately.
“People travelling from Fairbairn Avenue will be able to easily navigate their way onto the alignment using the newly established traffic signals.
“Traffic management workers will be on site to monitor traffic flow while commuters transition to using the road.
“The southbound carriageway, south of Tambreet Street, will remain closed for the short term while traffic management efforts focus on the northbound carriageway,” Minister Gentleman concluded.
Existing traffic arrangements will remain for southbound traffic travelling towards the airport, Majura Business Park, Tuggeranong and Fyshwick with traffic being diverted Majura Parkway at the Tambreet Street roundabout to Majura Road.
Work on the Molonglo River bridge continues and, once complete, will link the Majura Parkway to the Monaro Highway.
