ACT Policing is urging the public not to tarnish the responsible behaviour seen over the New Year’s period during the Summernats car festival.
As the four-day event kicks off at Exhibition Park in Canberra, police are maintaining a high-profile police presence within the event, in the surrounding suburbs and across the ACT.
The Operational Commander for the event, Station Sergeant Rod Anderson, said crowds should enjoy the event but police will be on the look-out for irresponsible behaviour.
“We will be providing around-the-clock patrols, monitoring drink-driving, burnouts, speeding and other anti-social behaviour,” Station Sergeant Anderson said.
The Summernats 27 events have already started well, with a trouble-free City Cruise which saw approximately 150 high performance vehicles drive down Northbourne Avenue this afternoon (January 2). Police estimate there was a crowd of about 20,000 lining Northbourne Avenue during the event.
Unfortunately, police yesterday (January 1) seized one high-performance vehicle for a period of three months after the 24-year-old male driver from Gowrie was caught conducting burnouts on Cooyong Street, Civic.
“Police, along with the ACT community, will not tolerate burnouts, especially in a public place like Cooyong Street. It is extremely dangerous. Not only is there a real risk of seriously injuring someone or yourself, police will catch you and you will lose your vehicle for three months,” Station Sergeant Anderson said.
Sergeant Anderson also paid tribute to the effective working relationship between ACT Policing and event organisers.
“Police will be supporting event security staff when evictions are necessary, and will have a high-police presence at hotspots such as Lonsdale Street in Braddon, amongst other spots across the ACT,” Station Sergeant Anderson said.
