The ACT Government wishes to advise Canberra residents impacted by industrial action on Friday 13 May 2016 that catch up services will be carried out over the weekend and on Monday.
Contractor SUEZ has confirmed that catch up collection services for suburbs impacted by the industrial action on Friday will commence on Saturday 14 May 2016 and continue through to Monday if required,” Michael Trushell, Director for ACT NOWaste, announced today.
In line with our previous advice, we encourage residents whose household and recycling bins are scheduled for collection on Friday to leave their bins on the kerb. If for some reason bins cannot be left out, they should be returned to the kerbside by 7 am each day until they are collected. If bins are not collected by Monday afternoon residents can contact SUEZ directly on 6260 1547.
“ACT NOWaste and contractor SUEZ have been working closely to identify contingency measures to help minimise the impact of missed bin collections on the community. As a result, the following arrangements will be in place from Friday 13 May to Thursday 19 May:
- excess household waste of up to two large plastic garbage bags can be disposed of for free at both the Mitchell and Mugga Lane Resource Management Centres. Proof of address such as a driver’s licence will need to be provided to demonstrate the resident is from a suburb whose bins were scheduled for collection on Friday. The Resource Management Centres are generally busy on weekends after lunch so residents may wish to avoid this period;
- recyclable materials from the yellow bin can be dropped-off for free at the six regional recycling drop of centres. Additional collections services have been scheduled to cope with the expected increase in the recyclable material being disposed of by affected residents.
Recycling drop-off centres are open 24 hours a day, seven days a week and are located at Jolly Street, Belconnen; Parkwood Road, Macgregor; O’Brien Place, Gungahlin; Baillieu Court, Mitchell, Botany Street, Phillip and Scollay Street, Tuggeranong. They can be used for recycling paper, cardboard, glass jars, bottles, rigid plastic containers, milk and juice cartons, aluminium cans and steel cans.”
Mr Trushell reminded the community further industrial action may be lawfully undertaken up to 8 June 2016 and encouraged residents to be mindful of their waste generation over the next few weeks.
“By minimising the amount of waste created, people may be able to help their friends, family or neighbours by offering them any room they have in their bin to dispose of excess waste.”
