ACT Policing and Emergency Services Agency staff have been relocated after contaminants were found at the Gungahlin Joint Emergency Services Centre (JESC).
Traces of lead and diesel particulates above acceptable levels were found in one part of the building during routine testing as part of planned building works.
A statement from ACT Policing said, as a result, both its organisation and the ESA had enacted “business continuity arrangements” just to be safe.
“Gungahlin station-based police officers will move to the former Traffic Operations Centre (TOC) in Belconnen,” it stated.
“Gungahlin patrols will continue to attend incidents in the Gungahlin district with an aim to ensure response times are kept to a minimum.”
The JESC is a multi-user facility that houses staff for ACT Policing, ACT Fire Brigade, ACT Ambulance and the ACT State Emergency Service.
The front office of the Gungahlin Station is shut from today (Thursday, 29 February), but people who want to speak with officers face-to-face can attend stations in the City, Belconnen, Woden and Tuggeranong, or call 131 444.
Gungahlin residents who attend the station as a bail condition will need to make alternative arrangements.
Further investigations are underway to identify the extent and source of the lead and diesel particulates.
It’s unclear how long officers will be relocated.
The Gungahlin closure comes after some ACT Policing staff at Civic Police Station had to move locations earlier this month due to water damage in the building.
