Daniel Savage, a local Gungahlin lad, and the NSW Gladiators are taking part in the City2Surf to raise money to assist with the costs of competition and to hopefully send the team over to NZ to compete later this year.
The NSW Gladiators Wheelchair Rugby Team are taking on the challenge of conquering City2Surf on Sunday 11 August as a fundraiser to help them compete in New Zealand in September.
Wheelchair Sports NSW, formed in 1961, is a non-profit organisation responsible for the development, promotion and delivery of wheelchair sport in NSW.
WS NSW is dedicated to enriching the lives of people with a disability through participation in sport.
Sport is a powerful rehabilitation tool for those who have suffered catastrophic injury, and a strong integrating force for those with a disability living in a predominately able bodied society.
For many individuals, participation in wheelchair sport is an important pathway to social connection, forming lifelong friendships, increasing confidence, social skills and education, and increasing overall motivation, determination and courage.
WS NSW provides sporting programs, wheelchairs, facilities, financial assistance and professional support staff for people with physical disability (ranging from spinal cord injury, spina bifida, amputation, paraplegia, quadriplegia to other similar disabling conditions), from 8-80 years of age to enjoy the benefits of involvement in sport at all stages, beginner to elite.
Some of these sports include wheelchair basketball, wheelchair tennis, wheelchair track and road, wheelchair rugby (“murder ball”) and wheelchair lawn bowls.
