The Gungahlin Drive upgrade is on track to start in September, with Cord Civil Pty Ltd named today as the contractor to deliver the 1.6km project, said Member for Molonglo and Gungahlin, Meegan Fitzharris.
“This is great news for motorists who use Gungahlin Drive on a regular basis and is part of our extensive plan to upgrade roads around the Gungahlin region over the next 12-18 months,” said Ms Fitzharris.
“This work will see the construction of three southbound lanes on Gungahlin Drive from north of Sandford Street through to the Barton Highway.
“New traffic lights will be installed at the Well Station Drive and Gungahlin Drive intersection and the left turn lane into Gungahlin Drive will also be duplicated.
“I know these works will help improve traffic congestion on this road and will ensure traffic can continue to flow around the network once the light rail project gets underway. It will also make it easier for commuters coming in and out of Mitchell.”
Ms Fitzharris urged motorists to be patient while the roadworks are completed.
“I know this will cause some disruption to our network, but the end result will be worth it.
“There may be some delays due to reduced speed limits, which are obviously needed to ensure safety for drivers and workers. But I understand there will be no lane closures during the usual morning peak hour traffic operations.
“There might also be some detours for pedestrians and cyclists while the work is undertaken.
“I would like to thank people for their patience in advance while this work gets underway.
“And thanks to Minister Gentleman for ensuring this work gets done as quickly as possible to ensure the Gungahlin road network can grow with our region.”
