The first stage of major works to ease traffic congestion on some of Gungahlin’s major roads is complete with the opening of the Gungahlin Drive upgrade.

Upgrade widening works on a 1.6 kilometre southbound section of Gungahlin Drive have been completed on time and will help Gungahlin commuters particularly in the morning peak period, Minister for Transport and Municipal Services Meegan Fitzharris said.

“I launched the start of works on the Gungahlin Drive upgrade project in September last year as the local Gungahlin member and I am very pleased to be able to mark the project’s completion following a nine month construction period,” Minister Fitzharris said.

“An additional third southbound lane has been constructed on Gungahlin Drive from about 500 metres north of the Sandford Street intersection through to the Barton Highway off-ramp.

“Improvements were also made to the Well Station Drive intersection to signalise and duplicate the left turn into Gungahlin Drive. These new arrangements will help reduce queuing in the through lanes from cars waiting to turn.

“Only minor landscaping works, including grass establishment and the provision of new LED bulbs for the area’s street lights, are left to be undertaken and are expected to be completed over the coming weeks.

“I’d like to thank road users for their patience while these roadworks have been underway. It’s great we are now seeing the end result of some of the works around Gungahlin.”

The Gungahlin Drive upgrade was the first project to start as part of a series of improvements to the Gungahlin road network and works are continuing on other arterial roads. The projects currently underway include:

  • Horse Park Drive duplication between Well Station Drive and Anthony Rolfe Avenue
  • Gundaroo Drive duplication between Gungahlin Drive and Mirrabei Drive
  • Extensions of Manning Clark Crescent and The Valley Avenue
  • Barton Highway/Gundaroo Drive/William Slim Drive roundabout upgrade

At the end of 2016 and in early 2017, works will also get underway on additional upgrade projects that were funded in the 2016-17 ACT Budget,” Minister Fitzharris said.

“We have committed $57 million to complete the duplication of Horse Park Drive, between the Federal Highway and Mulligans Flat Road, and we have allocated $4.5 million to fund the extension of Ernest Cavanagh Street, from Hinder Street to Manning Clark Crescent.”
