Due to proposed industrial action by the Transport Workers Union (TWU), it is likely that there will be no household waste and recycling collections on Thursday and Friday this week.
“This industrial action is very disappointing. We understand that any disruption to household waste and recycling services is frustrating for Canberra residents,” said David Roberts, Acting Director, ACT NOWaste.
“In an effort to reach an agreed outcome as quickly as possible, SITA has applied to the Fair Work Commission for a hearing to conciliate with the TWU. This application will be considered by the Commission at 9 am Wednesday 30 April 2014.
“While SITA’s application for independent conciliation is a positive step forward, it will not necessarily result in industrial action on Thursday and Friday being cancelled.
“The ACT Government will do everything possible to minimise disruption to residents, but of course nowhere in Australia are there spare fleets of these specialised vehicles and drivers. Residents are advised to leave bins at the kerb until collected. Hopefully this will take place over the weekend.
“The Mitchell and Mugga Resource Management Centres will also be made available for free disposal of household waste from garbage bins (such as 2-3 garbage bags of rubbish or the government stamped green bins on trailers) and recyclables for residents of impacted suburbs from the day of the strike and over the weekend. Residents will need to provide proof of address (eg. driver’s licence) to demonstrate that they are from the affected suburbs.
“The Resource Management Centres will also open extended hours until 6 pm.
“The contractor, SITA, will advise what they will do about catch-up collections. The ACT Government will keep residents updated on the situation. There are various ways to stay updated including online at www.tams.act.gov.au, downloading the My Waste app from iTunes or Google Play, following @tamsmediaroom on Twitter or calling Canberra Connect on 13 22 81.
“Residents facing genuine hardship or requiring emergency household waste or recycling collection will also be able to contact Canberra Connect on 13 22 81 to discuss alternative collection arrangements.
“Residents are also able to utilise the recycling drop-off centres which are open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. These are located at Jolly Street, Belconnen; Parkwood Road, Macgregor; O’Brien Place, Gungahlin; Baillieu Court, Mitchell; Botany Street, Phillip and Scollay Street, Tuggeranong. They can be used for recycling paper, cardboard, glass jars, bottles, rigid plastic containers, milk and juice cartons, aluminium cans and steel cans.”
