The Chief Minister recently attended a community forum with Capital Metro key stakeholders to discuss the role light rail could play in shaping Canberra’s future.
The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the role light rail can play in the transformation of the Northbourne Avenue corridor and on the liveability and urban renewal of our city in coming years and to provide feedback on the Stage 1 draft designs.
The Chief Minister provided the opening remarks and encouraged community leaders to consider all aspects of what will be an important city-building project with long term benefits for Canberra in terms of job creation and the densification of the city centre.
“This project is not only about running a tram line from Gungahlin to the City – while that on its own has merit, we have to also look at the city wide benefit and the economic development capacity a project like this could deliver,” the Chief Minister said.
“This meeting is being held during the six week community consultation which aims to directly connect key representatives from across Canberra including leaders from government, community councils, business, industry, universities and special interest groups with the Capital Metro project,” the Chief Minister said.
Good quality design, an integrated transport system and a choice of places and opportunities have been the focus of the discussion this morning.
“As with some of the other consultation sessions that have been underway over the last month the ideas from this workshop will feed into the next phase of the project and the outcomes will be openly shared with the community with footage, photos and ideas posted to the Capital Metro website.
“It’s great to see that hundreds of Canberrans have already provided their input and with another two weeks to go in this phase of consultation I encourage anyone interested in the project to go and meet with the team at one of the upcoming public forums and events.
Upcoming information sessions include:
Dickson Shopping Centre on Saturday 26 July between 9:30am and 1:30pm (outside Woolworths or in the event of poor weather inside the Dickson Library)*
Gungahlin Big W on Saturday 2 August between 9:30am and 1:30pm
People can also drop into the Capital Metro Information Centre at the bus interchange, City Walk Arcade, 2 Mort Street, behind platform 9 and is open Monday to Friday 8:30am – 5:30pm.
“The ACT Government will be making key decisions on the capital metro project over the next 3 months it is essential that community views and feedback feed into that decision making process. I am pleased to see how the consultations are going to date and look forward to hearing of the outcomes of this forum held today,” the Chief Minister concluded.
