As work continues to construct the 11.5 kilometre Majura Parkway, new traffic arrangements will be put in place to facilitate the next phase of the project, Tony Gill, Director, Roads ACT, said today.
“New traffic arrangements will be put in place at the southern and northern end of the Majura Parkway over the next week,” Mr Gill said.
Shared path at the Morshead Drive/Pialligo Avenue intersection
From Monday 25 November to Friday 6 December there will changed traffic conditions for pedestrians and cyclists using the shared user path on Morshead Drive at the Morshead Drive/Pialligo Avenue intersection adjacent to Sylvia Curley Bridge. This is to allow for a new shared user path to be constructed and used by pedestrians and cyclists while the Molonglo River bridge is built, which will take approximately two years. Cyclists and pedestrians will be diverted onto a gravel surface working platform until the new sealed shared user path is complete. Detour signage will be in place to alert pedestrians and cyclists to the changed conditions as well as temporary lights installed to improve visibility at night.
Majura Road
From Wednesday 27 November 2013 until late 2014 (weather permitting), northbound and southbound traffic using Majura Road, between Range Lane and the Federal Highway interchange, will be diverted on to a newly constructed section of the Majura Parkway. Once complete the Majura Parkway will run through the Majura Valley duplicating the existingMajura Road in the northern section and a new road will continue south over the Molonglo River on an alignment to the west of the existing road. This traffic diversion will enable construction of the new northbound lanes of the Majura Parkway on the existing Majura Road.
Morshead Drive
From Friday 29 November 2013 until early 2015 (weather permitting), northbound and southbound traffic using Morshead Drive, between the Fairbairn Avenue and Pialligo Avenue intersections, will be diverted on to a new temporary side road. This will enable construction of the new road and bridge over Fairbairn Avenue.
Mr Gill said signage will be in place to advise motorists of the changed traffic conditions.
“Other construction activities underway this month as part of the Majura Parkway project include: relocation of services; earthworks; installing retaining walls and drains; installing road base, asphalting, line marking and signage; and erecting bridge girders that will provide access to Cherryburn, Tambreet Street and Mount Majura Vineyard.
“Work is continuing on the foundations for the Molonglo River bridge, including widening of the northbound lanes of the Monaro Highway, and the Fairbairn Avenue bridge including installing traffic signals and lighting.”
“Night works will also continue intermittently until the end of this month to assist with construction of the new Fairbairn Avenue bridge including realignment of the existing Fairbairn Avenue and Morshead Drive intersection.
“Daily traffic updates for the project are made available on the Majura Parkway website each day. I encourage people to keep their eye on the website to stay up to date with the latest traffic arrangements for the project.”For more information visit http://www.tams.act.gov.au/roads-transport/major-construction-projects/majura-parkway
