ACT Policing is reminding motorists 40km/h school zone speed limits come back into effect for the start of the new school term tomorrow (Tuesday, 28 April 2020).
These speed restrictions are in force on weekdays between 8am and 4pm across the ACT, and apply to all school zones.
While many ACT school children are participating in online learning as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, many schools are open for students and others will continue to have teachers and staff on site.
Officer in Charge of Traffic Operations, Detective Station Sergeant Marcus Boorman said drivers who choose to ignore school zone speed limits would face tough penalties.
“The Canberra community should realise that all school zones are in operation and COVID-19 has not changed our focus on everyone’s safety on our roads,” Detective Station Sergeant Boorman said.
“Even though most children are conducting lessons from home, there are still some students – as well as teachers and other staff – attending schools, so school zone speed limits are still in operation to help protect all road users.
“Over the past few months, we’ve seen health directions and advice change quickly. The best thing we can do is tell you a sure thing that won’t change all term – that a 40km/h limit will apply in all schools zones between 8am and 4pm.
“Police will have a presence at the schools where children are learning and continue to proactively target all schools to ensure drivers are getting the message.
“The 40km/h speed limit is necessary in school zones because it gives motorists extra time to stop in unexpected situations.”
Access Canberra will also be working to support community safety around school zones, with mobile speed vans in operation.
Canberrans are also reminded to park safely and legally across our city, to support the safety of all road users and pedestrians.
