Chief Minister and Minister for Health, Katy Gallagher and Little Company of Mary Health Care Chair, The Hon John Watkins, have launched the Rapid Assessment and Planning Unit, Medical Assessment and Planning Unit and Stroke Service at Calvary Hospital.
The new services include an 8 bed Rapid Assessment and Planning Unit, a 12 bed Medical Assessment and Planning Unit, and a 4 bed Stroke Service.
“The launch of these new services at Calvary Hospital means that medical patients and patients with stroke will receive treatment and care that conforms to universally recognised best practice,” the Chief Minister said.
“Our health system is constantly changing and this announcement today is evidence that the government is adapting the services that are provided to the community to meet the latest national standards for key areas of care.
“A particular focus is to ensure that people are assessed quickly on arrival to hospital and then referred to relevant specialists for treatment as quickly as possible which will help to ensure patients get the best health outcomes,” the Chief Minister said.
The common features of the three new services are early assessment, investigation and planning; the timely commencement of specialist treatment; the engagement of allied health services and multidisciplinary collaboration immediately the patient is admitted; and structured meetings and discussions between the care team, the patient and their family or carer.
Little Company of Mary Health Care Chair, The Hon John Watkins, thanked the Chief Minister for the ACT Government’s continued investment in the expansion of services at Calvary Hospital.
“We are really pleased that admitted medical patients and people who have a stroke will be able to receive at Calvary Hospital the most suitable treatment for their condition, and in doing so have the best possible opportunity for a complete recovery,” The Hon John Watkins said.
“Being able to provide ‘best-practice’ treatment and care not only benefits the patient and their family or carer, but it also provides enormous satisfaction for the Calvary Hospital doctors, nurses and allied health professionals who see patients being able to enjoy their life with minimal impact of effects from their serious medical episode.
“The new services launched at Calvary Hospital are an 8 bed Rapid Assessment and Planning Unit, a 12 bed Medical Assessment and Planning Unit, and a 4 bed Stroke Service.
“The new services are supported by specialist Medical and Nursing Staff and allied health professionals with appropriate expertise and a genuine interest in these areas of public health.
“Underpinning the operations of the new services is a range of policies and procedures which ensure the services are integrated with existing Calvary Hospital practices and aligned with clinical networks across the Territory”, The Hon John Watkins concluded.
