Team Gungahlin have registered for the 2014 Jump to Cure Diabetes, a tandem skydive, and will be challenging ourselves while we raise funds for important medical research to improve the lives of those living with Type 1 Diabetes (T1D).

T1D is an autoimmune disease that strikes children and adults and lasts a lifetime. 122,300 kids and adults in Australia have this disease, and this number grows each year. Progress in T1D research has been extraordinary, with continued advances that are improving the lives of those living with T1D.

Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundaton (JDRF) are currently supporting up to 40 Australian research projects, but there are dozens more that need funding right now. Your donation will help turn research projects into clinical trials that lead to major developments and breakthroughs, improving the lives of those living with T1D and their families.

As a team we are hoping to raise over $10,000 towards these research projects. As individuals, each team member must raise a minimum $1,250 by the 14th March to be able to jump. If each of the My Gungahlin Facebook LIKES donated $2 each the team would easily surpass it’s target!

For any business that donate at least $50 they will get a thank you shout out on our Facebook page to our 5,100+ followers. Donate at least $100 and that business will get a thank you shout out plus a framed thank you picture from the day.

You can donate by going to the http://jdrf.org.au/teamgungahlin1 and then selecting the team member you wish to donate for. More details on each team member is below.

Cash donations can be made in our donation tins at Yeend & Associates – Family Lawyers on Anthony Rolfe Avenue and My Parea Espresso on Flemington Road.

The skydive will be taking place on March 22nd and March 29th. The landing zone will be the oval next to the mint in Deakin. Everyone is welcome to come and watch.

Andrew Taylor

“I was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes in my late teens, back in 1999. I currently uses an insulin pump to help manage my diabetes. I have noticed an improvement in my blood glucose levels, since starting pump therapy.”

Andrew was reluctant to agree to do the Jump to Cure Diabetes, as he isn’t a fan of heights and isn’t considered a risk taker. But since registering has realised that this is a huge opportunity for him to do what he can to help raise funds for diabetes research. Andrew hopes that the funds raised help find a cure sometime in the not too distant future.

Christian Searl

“My 10 year old son Riley was diagnosed with T1D in January 2013. Over the last year we have gone from knowing NOTHING, to experts in T1D and all that goes with managing it. Riley has been using an insulin pump for about 8 months now. We have our good & bad days, but the good far outweigh the bad. Riley and I have participated in several JDRF events such as jelly baby month and the walk to cure. I told Riley the jump would be a great way to raise funds for JDRF. It’s on my bucket list even though I am afraid of heights. I’m doing it for him.”

Mark Scarborough (Team Captain)

This is Mark’s second year taking part in the Jump To Cure Diabetes after taking part last year.

“The jump in 2013 was certainly a challenge as I have admitted publicly to not being a thrill seeker or adrenalin junkie. Also hating needles, I was hopeful that further research would mean kids in the future would no longer have to use needles to control their insulin levels.”

“Through the generous donations of individuals, businesses, family and friends I raised the required minimum amount to participate in the skydive in 2013 and went on to raise $2,495. I hope to beat that this year.

“Even though I did the jump last year, I am still nervous!”

Rachael Carne

“My 12 year old niece Grace was diagnosed 3 years ago with T1D. Until then to be honest diabetes never really crossed my mind! Watching a 9 year old adjust her entire life to live with this disease as well as her family, friends and school really opened my eyes to how T1D effects people!”

“I have never really taken part in much fundraising in the past but once this became a part of my life, seeing her have to always prick her finger and be careful of what she ate, missing out on things we were eating because her body couldn’t produce insulin naturally like ours just killed me and although she now has a pump which helps her to be a little bit more normal she still has a bulky machine attached to her 24/7 and it saves her life everyday!”

“I want to do anything and everything in my power to help JDRF raise awareness and much needed funds to find a cure for this disease so one day we can say that Grace used to have diabetes. No one should have to live with it and that’s why I’m doing the jump for a cure, to help get one step closer to no one having to!”

Sheree Fuller

“I heard about Mark’s participation last year on the My Gungahlin page and how successful he had been with fundraising. Since that time I had noticed a friends posts on Facebook regarding her sons experiences with Type One Diabetes and thought ‘no child should have to go through that!’. I heard this years advertisements and gained contact with a friend and suggested she sign up, five minutes later I found myself signing up instead!”

Although Sheree isn’t too afraid to jump, she is glad to be doing something for a good cause, other than helping raise funds for a cure Sheree would like to also raise more awareness of T1D!

Another Happy Customer (Official Team Gungahlin Photographers)“In 2013 I heard about Mark from My Gungahlin taking his first leap out of an aeroplane in an effort to fund raise for JDRF. I was so inspired by his dedication to raise awareness of this cause, that I offered to photograph his first skydiving experience; my way of saying thanks for being such a generous & charitable person. I was pleased to be offered the opportunity to support Team Gungahlin with photography again this year, hoping that the more the community can see what is being done by this amazing group of fundraisers, it may encourage even more support for future events as well as public awareness for JDRF. Go Team “G” !!!”

Mel Eveille (JDRF Coordinator)

Mel’s 12 year old daughter was diagnosed 3 years ago and Mel was actively involved with JDRF from the get go. As a passionate volunteer she was fortunate enough to become a part of the JDRF team 7 months ago.

“JDRF is a worldly acclaimed non for profit organisation. The current medical research programs are promising and of course need lots of funding and our Jump to Cure Diabetes campaign is in full swing. Team Gungahlin have jumped on board and this will be their second year skydiving for JDRF. They are a passionate group of people that either have a connection to Type 1 Diabetes or are participating because want to support and fundraise for medical research. Type 1 Diabetes is a chronic illness that currently effects 365 children living in ACT. Multiple injections and countless finger pricks are a part of everyday life for a child living with this condition. JDRF are passionate about preventing and curing Type 1 Diabetes. The passionate embrace by our local community and the likes of Team Gungahlin is empowering and gives our children HOPE!”
