2012 was a big year for us here at My Gungahlin with the launch of our new website in the middle of the year. Our followers on Facebook and Twitter have increased dramatically over the last 12 months. In December 2011 we had just over 100 LIKES on Facebook, we are now close to 1,250.
We would like to thank the following groups for their cooperation and support of My Gungahlin in 2012. Gungahlin Community Council, GRCS, Gungahlin Jets, Gungahlin Marketplace, Gungahlin Village, Gungahlin Catholic Schools and Parish and Harrison School Community Association. We would like to also thank our followers on Facebook and Twitter that have added to the conversations.
We are always looking for more content to publish on our website from schools, community groups and sporting groups. Please feel free to get in touch with us to discuss how we can help spread news and events for your group.
It has been a big year for Gungahlin with several big developments announced and some developments coming along.
- Majura Parkway announced.
- Duplication of Gundaroo Drive announced.
- Enclosed oval being developed with the oval now turfed.
- Construction started on the leisure centre.
- Developer announced for ACT Government building.
- ACT Government seeking expressions of interest for Cinema complex.
- ACT Government announcing light rail between Gungahlin and Civic
- Group Centres being developed at Casey and Amaroo.
The following is a summary of 2012.
January
2012 started with a a fire at a brothel in Mitchell which was suspected arson. Canberra Times:Arson Suspected In Brothel Fire.
Summernats was held and confirmed would return in 2013.
It was announced 500 public servants would be moved to Gungahlin. Canberra Times:500 PS Jobs Head North.
Apparently we had a cold snap on the 11th of January. We posted on Facebook “It is wrong to put the heater on. Isn’t it?”
February
Harrison High School opened its doors for the first time.
Gungahlin activist and ex-president of the Gungahlin Community Council, Allan Kerlin announced he would run with the ACT Greens in the ACT Government election.
There was a house fire at Attunga Street, Ngunnawal
March
Gungahlin was drenched with a lot of rain.
It was announced that Gungahlin Drive extension would have the speed increased from 80km/h to 90km/h. Canberra Times:Government lifts speed limit on GDE to 90kmh.
Demolition commenced on the industrial site in Mitchell that was engulfed in a massive flame in 2011.

April
On April fools we posted a great status update announcing the GDE would be reverted back to 80km/h only just having being changed to 90km/h. Quite a few people were caught out by this prank.
ACT Rangers started a crackdown on illegal dumping at charity bins with on the spot fines being issued.
Gungahlin was rocked by an earth tremor to the west of Canberra. Canberra Times:Mini Quake Shakes ACT.
May
The G started rebranding to Gungahlin Village.
The Clarrie Hermes extension to the Barton Highway was opened.
E-Waste recycling at Mitchell resource centre commenced with great success.
The Federal announced there was $144m in the budget for the Majura Parkway. Canberra Times:New parkway an opportunity to capitalise on Majura Valley..
The Gungahlin Jets and ANU Griffins held the innagural Pink Footy Day with great success supported by the GWS Giants.
It was announced the Gungahlin enclosed oval will have a grandstand. Canberra Times:Funding to finish grandstand.
June
The Abbey Function centre announced a bill of live music gigs to be held there.
Analogue TV broadcast was turned off for good.
Another earth tremor was reported early 17th June.
The inaugural Harrison Art Show was held.
Gungahlin library celebrated its first birthday.
A Navy Seahawk arrived at Burgmann school. Great for show and tell!
One of the big news stories of the year would have to be the yellow pamphlet distributed in Gungahlin opposing the Mosque being built in Gungahlin. Canberra Times:Pamphlet opposing Gungahlin Mosque to be probed.
July
A Gungahlin baby was born just off the GDE on the way to Calvary. The second in nearly the same location within one year. Canberra Times:Another baby joins the GDE club.

Canberra’s biggest supermarket opens in Gungahlin after Coles’ renovations at the Gungahlin Village were finalised.
August
A new community centre was opened in Forde. My Gungahlin: New Forde Community Centre Opens.

October

Gungahlin voted in the ACT Election.
November
Gungahlin’s newest recreation park opens in Crace. My Gungahlin: Crace recreation park a first for Canberra.

At a breakfast with sponsors and local VIPs the Gungahlin Jets announced Senator Lundy as it’s number one ticket holder. My Gungahlin: Gungahlin Jets welcomes Senator Lundy on board.
December
