Tomorrow morning, ACT Chief Minister Andrew Barr will officially open Winyu House, the first ACT Government building designed with early childhood education in mind.

YWCA Canberra Executive Director Frances Crimmins said she was very pleased that the feminist, not-for-profit organisation had been chosen to be involved in this project.

“Winyu House has many wonderful features but perhaps its most ground-breaking is the inclusion of early childhood education onsite.

“This shows a dedication by the ACT Government to embrace the needs of working families,” Ms Crimmins said.

YWCA Canberra successfully tendered to provide early childhood education and care in Winyu House last year, and senior staff have worked closely with the ACT Government on the service’s design and fit out.

“We’ve created a facility that is world-leading, innovative and unique to Canberra.

“It is the largest service that provides multi-age formats, ensuring family groups can stay together.

“We are committed to a gender-neutral curriculum, and providing a beautiful, calm, learning environment,” Ms Crimmins added.

Ms Crimmins said YWCA Canberra had made a significant investment in order to enter into the partnership with the ACT Government.

“This represents a new phase in our provision of children’s services in Canberra, and we are excited to be involved in Winyu House.”

Winyu Early Childhood Service is a 90-place service which opened earlier this month. Priority is given to families working in Winyu House, but it also services the Gungahlin community and wider region.

YWCA Canberra has been providing children’s services in Canberra for more than 30 years, as part of its commitment to supporting women to achieve security and independence through economic participation, and providing children and young people with the skills they need to create a better future.
