July road user safety focus: speeding

This month, the joint road safety campaign between ACT Policing and the Justice and Community Safety Directorate will target speeding.

Police have already issued more than 1900 Traffic Infringement Notices for speeding in 2018, including 34 for exceeding the speed limit by over 45 kilometres per hour.

The ACT has different speed limits in different areas, which include school zones (40km/h) and signposted road works zones, such as those around the construction of the ACT Light Rail.

Officer in Charge of Traffic Operations, Station Sergeant David Wills urged ACT drivers to be mindful of speed limits on the roads, and also to be conscious of the dangers of violating those speed limits.

“There is simply no excuse for speeding,” Station Sergeant Wills said.

“When you are behind the wheel of a vehicle, you are responsible for your own safety and the safety of others, including vulnerable road users.”

“The faster you go the harder you hit, and the more likely a collision resulting in serious injury or death will occur. Don’t let one action have life altering consequences for yourself or others.”

“With nearly 2000 motorists booked for speeding so far in 2018, there are still far too many people out on Canberra’s roads ignoring the speed limits.”

“Our message is quite simple – don’t speed.”

This campaign forms part of the ACT Road Safety Strategy 2011-2020 which prioritises a Vision Zero approach to road safety.
