Today Chief Minister Andrew Barr launched Summernats 29, the iconic car festival which delivers millions of dollars into the ACT economy every summer.

The Street Machine Summernats car festival has been held at Exhibition Park in Canberra for the past 28 years, with the popularity of the event continuing to rise. In 2015, Summernats attracted a crowd of 108,000 attendees over the four days.

Chief Minister Bar said at the launch “Summernats provides a significant boost to the local Canberra economy during the quiet summer months, generating over $20 million in economic benefit to the Territory. Nearly 30,000 interstate visitors flock to Canberra for this event which benefits many local businesses in the hospitality, retail and the hotel industries.

“By driving interstate visitors to the capital, Summernats also helps promote our city. A recent report into the event shows that almost a third of those who attended last year’s Summernats said the festival, and their experience while in Canberra had changed their perception of our city for the better.

“In addition, more than two-thirds of interstate visitors said their experience in Canberra during last year’s festival has made them want to return to see more of our city.

“Summernats is the largest automotive festival of its kind in the southern hemisphere, and includes local music acts, inspiring street machines and the popular Fireworks Spectacular. In recent years, event organisers have taken a more family friendly approach to the event which has helped see the attendance numbers grow.”

Summernats 29 will be on at Exhibition Park in Canberra from the 7 – 10 January 2016. For more information visit www.summernats.com.au.
