Stay safe in ACT waterways these holidays

With summer now here, Minister for Territory and Municipal Services and Sport and Recreaction, Shane Rattenbury, would like to remind Canberra residents and visitors to stay safe when swimming in the Territory’s many superb waterways, and look out for the easy to understand signs.

“There are many great spots along the Murrumbidgee River Corridor for a swim, including Uriarra Crossing, Casuarina Sands, Kambah Pool, the Tharwa Sandwash, Pine Island and Cotter Bend,” said Mr Rattenbury.

“While these are great places to take family and friends for a refreshing dip on a hot Canberra day, it is important to remember the risks of being in and around water.

“Signage has been installed along the banks of many popular waterways to help people understand and prepare for the risks associated with swimming in rivers in the ACT.

“People should not be afraid of the water, but they should be aware of a few simple precautions they should take to stay safe.

“Take note of any water safety signage. The signage is there to help you make informed decisions and to keep you from getting into a dangerous situation. Never dive into water if you are unsure of the depth and keep an eye out for submerged logs, other hazards and wildlife.

“Children should never be left unsupervised or in the care of older children and should be within a safe distance at all times. Supervising adults should be appropriately dressed to enter the water at all times.

“It is also important to watch the flow of the water. Flowing water is stronger than you think. Finally, never drink alcohol and swim.

More information about the Murrumbidgee River Corridor is available at www.tams.act.gov.au

“Similar safety precautions also need to be taken when using backyard and public pools and it is vital that while children are in the water the supervising adult is constantly monitoring their activities.”
