More than 1,000 people have signed a petition to see the duplication of Gundaroo Drive in the north of Canberra delivered in the ACT Government’s Budget on 2 June.

Member for Molonglo and Gungahlin, Meegan Fitzharris, started the petition in February this year following the results of a Gungahlin Community Council (GCC) survey and a discussion with the GCC at its February meeting.

Ms Fitzharris presented the petition to the Minister for Roads, Mick Gentleman, today, and thanked My Gungahlin and its readers for their support.

“Duplicating Gundaroo Drive is the most important road project people in Gungahlin have raised with me. It is a major cause of congestion and frequent site of road accidents.

“I stated a petition to show just how much community support there is for this project, with the hope of securing funding in this year’s ACT Budget.

“The petition calls on the ACT Government to prioritise the duplication of Gundaroo Drive in the 2015-16 Budget, with the section between Mirrabei Drive and Gungahlin Drive a particular bottleneck.

“Thank you to everyone who signed the petition. With 1,030 signatures, I believe it’s clear that duplicating Gundaroo Drive should get underway as soon as possible.

“Making sure that the Gungahlin road network is able to cope with the growing Gungahlin population is one part of the wider transport needs for Gungahlin.

“These needs also include investment in walking and cycling facilities and a modern public transport system, of which Capital Metro will be a key component,” said Ms Fitzharris.
