Mother nature has turned on a cracker day for the launch of Canberra’s light rail with a top of 26 degrees expected.

“The sun is shining on Canberra for the community launch of light rail,” said Meghan Oldfield, Transport Canberra Light Rail Project Director.

“We want everyone to enjoy their first experience of light rail while staying comfortable and safe,” Ms Oldfield said.

Ms Oldfield said the great weather means Canberrans need to be prepared to wait in the heat.

“We’re expecting a lot of people to come to our events, but that means queues, so it’s important to be sun smart with sunscreen, a hat and ready with water. We will keep you entertained with live music and roving entertainers while we move the queues as quickly as we can.”

Passengers will have to get off light rail at the end of the line to give others a chance to ride.

“Leave the car at home and use free public transport to bring you and your family to Gungahlin or the City.

“Check out the launch website for details of park and ride. You could use the parking at GIO stadium, get a bus to the City, ride light rail to Gungahlin and get a bus back to your car.

“Or you could catch light rail a few stops and hop off to walk or ride back on an Airbike to Gungahlin or the City.

“If you don’t want to queue today, free travel for a month from 29 April gives Canberrans thousands of opportunities to experience light rail beyond the launch day.”
