Minister for Territory and Municipal Services, Shane Rattenbury, today launched ACTION’s Nightrider bus service for what promises to be a bumper festive season in the City.

“It’s great to see the service in operation for another year, providing people with a convenient, safe and reliable means to get home during the festive season,” Mr Rattenbury said.

“This year we have increased the number of buses to 10, which will mean more direct services to suburbs and a quicker journey home.

“Following feedback from the community earlier this year, Nightrider will drop people off at the nearest bus stop to their home, including some of our newer suburbs in Gungahlin and Weston Creek, for a flat $5 cash fare.

“This year buses will depart the City half an hour earlier than in previous years to cater to the large number of Canberrans viewing the Guinness World Record™ largest LED Image Display in the world. This will help attract a new segment of the market to the service as well as cater to late night movie-goers.

“Nightrider will operate between midnight and 3.45am on 5-6 December, 12-13 December, 19-20 December and on New Year’s Eve.

“The Nightrider bus provides a convenient, reliable and safe option for people to get home using public transport late at night, particularly for those who have been drinking.”

To catch the Nightrider will cost passengers $5 cash. MyWay cards will not be accepted.

“The service will be promoted through television, radio, social media and on ACTION’s website. On-the-ground promotion will also take place on each night of operation with promotional staff distributing information and timetables.

“I encourage Canberrans to leave the car at home this year for their festive celebrations and let Nightrider be your designated driver home,” Mr Rattenbury concluded.

Buses will depart from Platform 7 at the City Bus Station and service all Canberra suburbs, dropping passengers at the closest bus stop to their home.
