Our suggestion for Gungahlin road duplication

We all know that there needs to be improvements to Gungahlin main arterial roads and most still require duplication to handle the increased traffic from Gungahlin’s population growth.

We have also been subject to a number of major roadworks at once which whilst needed has meant most of the main roads in and out of Gungahlin have been impacted.

As a community we have to appreciate the Government does have to manage it’s budget as we have to manage our own household budgets. Therefore not all roads can be duplicated at once and should be staged carefully to reduce the impact to traffic flow. We recently issued a poll asking our Facebook followers to prioritise which roads they think should be duplicated. Based on those results below we present how we think this could be addressed.

Here is an update of current construction and our recommendation of how future upgrades should be planned.

Gundaroo Drive is currently being duplicated from Gungahlin Drive to Mirrabei Drive. This is due to be completed in early 2018. There is a planned switch onto the new carriageway to upgrade the old carriageway in the middle of 2017.

The design of the duplication of Gundaroo Drive between Gungahlin Drive and Barton Highway is complete and the DA approved. There is currently no funding for the works however this is being considered.

The duplication of Horse Park Drive from Federal Highway to Mulligans Flat road is funded in the 2016-17 budget and is expected to be funded in 2017-18 as the project will go into this financial year. The project is expected to be completed in late 2018 being phased as follows:

  • Stage 1: Well Station Drive – Anthony Rolfe Avenue (underway) completion mid 2017
  • Stage 2: Anthony Rolfe Avenue – Mulligans Flat Road, April 2017 – late 2018
  • Stage 3: Well Station Drive – Federal Highway – Mid 2017 – late 2018

Flemington Road will have two lanes in each direction between Well Station Drive and the Federal Highway once the light rail project is complete.

Based on a poll we ran last week and trying to balance and spread out the road works we believe the remaining roads should be duplicated in the following priority and schedule.

Gundaroo Drive from Gungahlin Drive to Barton Highway – build in FY 2017/2018

Gungahlin Drive from Gundaroo Drive to Horse Park Drive – design in FY 2017/2018, build in FY 2018/2019

*Missed from the survey.

Completing Nudurr Drive from Gundaroo Drive to Gungahlin Drive would also alleviate pressure on Gundaroo Drive and Gungahlin Drive.
