G-Tree Cafe review by Karen Really Likes Food

G-tree cafe has been an ongoing presence in Gungahlin for a number of years and has built a devoted following. Not only do they offer great food and coffee but they are in a prime location, positioned within the shopping centre. Even better, the indoor playground is located just outside and they will deliver coffee to it while you wrangle your children. Major selling point! Indoor and outdoor seating is also available if you wish to escape the children.

The cafe also offers a great menu. All day breakfast is always a beautiful thing and these guys know how to poach an egg. The truffled poached eggs and roasted mushrooms with brioche (Portobello Eggs) is a stand-out.

Breakfast staples like omelets, egg and bacon rolls and eggs benedict are also well done. If you feel like dessert for breakfast the Morning Apple Crumble will fit the bill, comprising baked apple and berries with a quinoa and coconut crumb.

They also serve big fluffy American style pancakes either with bacon and maple syrup with a maple butter or a berry compote with honey cinnamon labne. If you are extra hungry the Stockman’s breakfast offers every breakfast item you can imagine but be warned, all of the serving sizes are huge here.

The lunch menu consists of a mix of salads, sandwiches, burgers and pasta dishes (including risottos). The salads are all modern and interesting, going beyond your typical greek salad. My personal favourite is the calamari salad. The calamari is tender, deep fried with a bit of a spicy kick, with a green salad so you can pretend it is healthy. Other choices include a Japanese influenced yakitori chicken salad, pumpkin and quinoa or the always delicious grilled haloumi. The chicken yakitori is also used in a burger, as well as beef and pulled pork options.

Moving onto the pasta menu, another favourite of mine is the beetroot risotto. This is a garish bright pink and made with wild rice, giving a lovely earthy nutty flavour. If you want something a bit more restrained a chicken risotto is available, as well as range of linguine’s. Lastly if you feel like something fried you have a choice of Korean fried chicken or beer battered fish and chips. Korean fried chicken is a burgeoning food fad and certainly worth checking out. The fish and chips are served piping hot, crispy and delicious. If you still have room, or want something sweet, the cafe has a tempting display cabinet full of cakes and muffins available.

Overall G-tree is a really nice little cafe. The coffee is always great and the food is consistently good. I am always happy to visit. It is also super convenient for parents being playground adjacent, with helpful and patient wait staff. They also have their own toilets with a change table facility, which seems to be a rarity these days.
