Minister for Sport and Recreation, Shane Rattenbury, has officially launched Cricket ACT’s 2014-15 season.

“Our ACT Comets recently played matches against Afghanistan, and are making the most of having the Irish team in Canberra, and giving our home grown talent the opportunity to play higher level competition in preparation for their first Cricket Australia Future’s League match later in October,” said Mr Rattenbury.

“The ACT Meteors get their season underway this weekend here at Manuka with T20 matches on Friday and Sunday and a one-day fixture on Saturday.

“Cricket ACT’s grassroots programs continue to excel and their annual Kookaburra Cup recently saw more than 500 local and interstate junior cricketers compete and over 3,000 registered junior players are set to participate in club and IN2CRICKET programs this summer.

The quality of the local men’s and women’s grade cricket competition continues to improve with players vying for representative honours.

The ACT Government continues to work with Cricket ACT to further improve facilities for local cricketers, as well as improving our international venues such as Manuka Oval, enhancing the opportunities available for grassroots through to the elite product.

“Upcoming cricket highlights this season also include a One-Day International fixture between Australia and South Africa in November, the annual Prime Ministers XI match against England in January, and the KFC Twenty20 Big Bash League Grand Final which will be preceded by the Women’s T20 Final and hopefully featuring our ACT Meteors.

“Manuka Oval will then host three matches in the 2015 Cricket World Cup featuring; Bangladesh, Afghanistan, West Indies, Zimbabwe, South Africa and Ireland, further confirming the ground’s status as an international standard venue.

I wish all local and international cricketers every success in the upcoming 2014-15 season and fingers crossed for perfect weather for what is set to be a bumper Summer of cricket.

The local cricket club for Gungahlin is North Canberra Gungahlin Cricket Club.
