The ACT Indoor Sport Facility Report as commissioned by the ACT Government in 2015 acknowledged that as population growth continues in Gungahlin there will be an increased demand for additional sport facilities.

The ACT Government has committed to undertake a feasibility study for the construction of an indoor sports facility in Gungahlin. The scope for this feasibility study is expected to be finalised in the first half of 2017 and will commence shortly thereafter. It is expected the study will include:

  • The identification of suitable parcels of land (including size, land zoning and availability);
  • Consideration if new indoor sports facilities could be co-located at existing or proposed schools; and
  • The potential delivery and ownership models for the proposed facility.

We have been advised that the study would not be completed until 2018, with its recommendation to be used to guide the next stage of the process.

In an article we wrote last month Magnet Mart, Closed. Now what? we suggested the old Magnet Mart Home Timber and Hardware site would have been a great site to consider for an indoor sports centre. However, based on the timings of the proposed study I don’t see it being viable to consider as I would imagine by then it would have been re-purposed.
