What a year 2014 has been, let’s wind back the clock and look back at the last year and read on to what is in store for 2015 and beyond.

2014 has been a pretty exciting year for Gungahlin with the opening of the Gungahlin Leisure Centre and Gungahlin Enclosed Oval and some big announcements and developments starting. The next couple of years will see Gungahlin change quite a fair bit with more developments and retail in the area. 2014 has also seen the rollout out of NBN in Gungahlin with the majority of Gungahlin completed and some areas having the old copper network being decommissioned.

2014 has also been an exciting year for My Gungahlin. We started with 4,500 Facebook followers on our page, since then we have more than doubled that in the last year!

This year we welcomed a lot of new sponsors of My Gungahlin as Platinum Partners. These businesses advertising with us keep My Gungahlin ticking. If you are a Gungahlin business and would like to advertise directly to the Gungahlin community please get in touch.

My Gungahlin – 2013 in review

Stop signs were installed at the intersection of Hinder & Hibberson Streets. Based on what I have seen the rate of accidents has decreased but I still believe lights or a roundabout would be a better option. The Government has indicated though that nothing big will happen until light rail is installed.

A DA was approved for the Franklin shops which will include a Woolworths supermarket.

In February social media was used at its best to reunite a baby that was in the back of a car that was stolen from Ngunnawal. ACT Policing rang us when this first occurred asking us to share the description of the car and offender. Thankfully the baby was found safe not long after. The offender was later arrested.

2015 and beyond for Gungahlin

The ACT Government office building on The Valley Avenue is coming along nicely. A lot of the scaffolding is starting to come down. This is due for completion in May 2015 with staff moving in very soon after that. Part of this building will also be a Canberra Connect shopfront.

Unfortunately the development of the Cinema site has been delayed and won’t start now until late 2015. This is extremely disappointing as this is about 12 months later than the original start date. I have been informed that contracts have been exchanged between the developer and a Cinema operator however an announcement has not been provided as yet as to who it will be.

Sport and Recreation Services committed $500,000 to the development of the Franklin Community Recreation Irrigated Park adjacent to the Franklin Early Childhood Centre in partnership with LDA. Work is well underway on the site and completion is anticipated by early 2015. The facilit will include an irrigted grass kick around space, a learn to skate area, a multipurpose sports court, cricket nets, playgrounds, outdoor gym equipment, toilet amenities, barbeque facilities and tables and seating.

The Common Ground building on The Valley Avenue is continuing to go up and is expected to be finished in 2015.

The extension of The Marketplace, the Bunnings development and the Cinema complex will give Gungahlin a lot more retail in the coming years including another major tenant in The Marketplace.

The Casey and Amaroo group centres are both expected to start development in 2015 bringing Aldi and Supabarn to Casey and Coles to Amaroo.

The next couple of years is going to be an exciting time in Gungahlin with all these developments coming up.

Here at My Gungahlin HQ we are excited about 2015 as well. We are expecting to hit 10,000 Facebook followers in the first 3 months which is a huge number when you compare it to other Canberra Facebook pages. We are always looking to welcome new Platinum Sponsors on board to advertise with us to the Gungahlin community.

We would like to thank all members for joining in the conversations and sharing with us thoughts, opinions and photos over the last 12 months.

We thank all our Platinum Sponsors that have supported us throughout 2014, without their support we wouldn’t be able to do what we do for the Gungahlin community. Please show your thanks and support them where you can and give their Facebook pages a LIKE too!
