Following a ballot of its members, the Transport Workers Union (TWU) has announced it will be taking industrial action leading to disruptions to household waste and recycling collection.
While the dates need to be confirmed, the TWU has indicated it may be as early as mid to late next week. The ACT Government will keep residents updated on the situation. Updates will be made available at www.tams.act.gov.au, by calling 13 22 81 or via the free My Wasteapp.
“We continue to hope the TWU and SITA will be able to reach agreement without any industrial action. We understand that any disruption to household waste and recycling services is frustrating for Canberra residents,” said David Roberts, Acting Director, ACT NOWaste.
“The ACT Government will do everything possible to minimise disruption to residents.
“The Mitchell and Mugga Resource Management Centres will be made available for free disposal of household waste (such as bags of rubbish or bins on trailers) and recyclables from the day of any industrial action. The Resource Management Centres will also open extended hours until 6 pm.
“Residents facing genuine hardship or requiring emergency household waste or recycling collection will also be able to contact Canberra Connect on 13 22 81 to discuss alternative collection arrangements.
“Residents are also able to utilise the regional recycling drop-off centres which are open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. These are located at Jolly Street, Belconnen; Parkwood Road, Macgregor; O’Brien Place, Gungahlin; Baillieu Court, Mitchell; Botany Street, Phillip and Scollay Street, Tuggeranong. They can be used for recycling paper, cardboard, glass jars, bottles, rigid plastic containers, milk and juice cartons, aluminium cans and steel cans.”
Mr Roberts said the ACT Government had understood that the bargaining process between Transport Workers Union and SITA had been progressing well and neither party had identified any particular issue in recent times.
“We continue to encourage both parties to bargain in good faith and reach agreement as quickly as possible so that disruptions do not continue.”
