The National Arboretum Canberra will today present the National Dinosaur Museum at Gold Creek with a Wollemi Pine to help celebrate Threatened Species Day and honour the relationship between the two institutions.
Curator of the National Bonsai and Penjing Collection, Leigh Taafe, said the ancient tree was part of an exchange between the Arboretum and the Museum.
“The Museum recently loaned a very large specimen of petrified wood to the Bonsai and Penjing Collection,” Mr Taaf said.
This fantastic specimen is a large section of tree trunk and is now on display at the Bonsai and Penjing Collection. It has proven very popular with visitors.
“In exchange for this amazing example of the earth’s history, the Arboretum offered to provide one of our Wollemi Pines, so it could be planted on their grounds.
“With today being Threatened Species Day, we thought it was a perfect time to deliver this tree that is a survivor from the dinosaur age to the Dinosaur Museum. We are sure it will fit right in with the other pre-historic exhibits.
“The tree will have a plaque celebrating the relationship National Dinosaur Museum has formed with us at the National Arboretum Canberra and the National Bonsai and Penjing Collection.”
