Local Gungahlin MLA Meegan Fitzharris today announced that works to ease traffic congestion on some of Gungahlin’s major routes will begin in coming weeks.

“I’m so pleased these roadworks are about to commence. So many people have told me they would like to see our roads improved, so it’s great to see this work will begin very soon,” said Ms Fitzharris.

The suite of roadworks planned from September 2015 to relieve congestion in Gungahlin includes:

  • Widening a 1.6 kilometre section of Gungahlin Drive to three southbound lanes from north of Sandford Street through to the Barton Highway.
  • Upgrading the Barton Highway/Gundaroo Drive/William Slim Drive roundabout to incorporate additional lanes and traffic lights on all four of its approaches.
  • Duplicating Gundaroo Drive to a dual carriageway between Gungahlin Drive and Mirrabei Drive/Anthony Rolfe Avenue.
  • Extending two significant local roads east of the Gungahlin Town Centre (The Valley Avenue and Manning Clark Crescent).
  • From late 2015, duplicating Horse Park Drive to a dual carriageway between Anthony Rolfe Avenue and Well Station Drive. Intersections at Anthony Rolfe Avenue, Mapleton Avenue and Well Station Drive will also be upgraded.

“The ACT Government is committed to the future of Gungahlin and the Gungahlin Town Centre as part of our long term vision for a truly sustainable and creative city. As someone who lives and drives around Gungahlin every day, I know these improvements will ease congestion, improve access and make our roads safer.

“I thank the Minister for Roads, Mick Gentleman, for making these works a priority.”

Ms Fitzharris said a recent community consultation showed that 73 per cent of respondents wanted road upgrade projects to be delivered at the same time.

“People told us they would like these roadworks to all start as soon as possible. The roadworks may add to traffic congestion during the construction phase, however people travelling to, from and through Gungahlin will reap the benefits of greater capacity roads and improved traffic flow sooner.

“I would like to thank motorists in advance for their patience during these works which are scheduled for completion in late 2016 – early 2017,” Ms Fitzharris said.
