Motorists are encouraged to plan ahead next week when traveling at night along the light rail corridor, with closures of several intersections in place to test the new signalling system for light rail.

The tests are being carried out overnight to minimise disruption and to conduct them safely, Canberra Metro will close intersections on Flemington Road, Federal Highway and Northbourne Avenue starting Sunday 17 February between 8pm – 6am.

Diversions for motorists will be in place and clearly sign-posted along the corridor.

The following intersections will be closed to all southbound and northbound right-turning traffic, and to traffic crossing through:

  • Lysaght Street
  • Mitchell Resource Centre
  • Randwick Road
  • EPIC
  • Phillip Avenue
  • Swinden
  • Morphett and Murdoch Street
  • Macarthur-Wakefield Avenues
  • Masson-Girrahween Street
  • Elouera-Gould Street

There will be a number of temporary closures at the remaining intersections between Mitchell and the City, along the corridor, to give light rail vehicles priority to travel through. Intersections will be re-opened once they pass.

Light rail vehicles will always have priority at traffic lights, meaning the order of traffic light sequencing will vary for motorists, pedestrians and cyclists.

It is important for everyone in the community to be aware, stay safe and obey the road rules as the environment changes around the light rail corridor.
