Historic Hall Village is celebrating late 19th century life in the ACT district in a new exhibition at the heritage-listed Hall School opened by Minister for the Environment and Sustainable Development, Simon Corbell today.

The exhibition, On Our Selections, commemorates the pre-federation inhabitants of the district with special attention to women and Aboriginal people.

“Focussing on the experiences of women and Aboriginal people helps us to gain a broader picture of life in those times and perhaps see history in a different way,” Mr Corbell said.

“Friends of Hall School Museum are to be congratulated for their passion for sharing our district’s early history with the wider community through this and other exhibitions.

“The Hall School Museum is known as one of the best organised Australian school museums with respect to the comprehensiveness of its collections of artefacts, teaching materials and administrative records.

“This is only achievable with the passion, support and hard work of the local community groups and the volunteers.”

The exhibition, further conservation work on the museum’s collection and acquisition of appropriate storage and display furniture were all funded through an ACT Heritage Grant. The opening coincides with the Canberra and Region Heritage Festival, which runs from 5-21 April.

It is the third exhibition at the school funded through Heritage Grants, and explores a different aspect of local history than previous exhibitions.

The exhibition will be open on Saturday 12 and Sunday 13 April from 10:00am-4:00pm as part of the Heritage Festival.
