Free recycling facility opens in Gungahlin

Residents of Gungahlin now have access to a new Recycling Drop Off Centre that was officially opened today by Minister for Territory and Municipal Services, Shane Rattenbury, today.

“This is a timely addition to Canberra’s current recycling network and is intended to help residents and small businesses recycle more, reduce the amount of waste that goes to landfill and ultimately conserve the diminishing landfill space,” Mr Rattenbury said.

“The facility comprises a cage for paper and cardboard recycling and hoppers for glass jars and bottles, rigid plastic containers, milk and juice cartons, aluminium cans and steel cans (including aerosols).

“Facilities such as the Gungahlin Recycling Drop Off Centre play a major role in working towards the ACT Government’s commitment to achieving over 90 percent resource recovery of its waste stream by 2025.

“Almost 5,000 tonnes of recyclable material was collected from the existing seven drop off recycling centres in the 2012-13 financial year.” Mr Rattenbury said that small businesses in particular should consider how they dispose of their waste.

“Recycling is often an underutilised disposal method for small businesses in Canberra. The establishment of recycling drop off centres is one way the government encourages businesses to recycle.

“The facility is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week and has been fitted with CCTV cameras which will aid in monitoring illegal dumping. Members of the community who witness illegal dumping at the facility should report it by contacting Canberra Connect on 13 22 81.

The facility is located in O’Brien Place, Gungahlin near Waves Car Wash.

Other recycling drop off centres in Canberra are located in Tuggeranong, Hume, Phillip, two in Belconnen and two in Mitchell.
