The first sod was turned today for works to duplicate Gundaroo Drive from Gungahlin Drive to Mirrabei Drive/Anthony Rolfe Avenue, marking the first milestone for this key infrastructure investment in Gungahlin.

The works will be undertaken by Woden Contractors and will improve safety and relieve congestion in the growing Gungahlin region. Preparatory works have already begun and residents should see visible road works next month.

Minister for Transport and Municipal Services Meegan Fitzharris said duplication of Gundaroo Drive was a key commitment for the ACT Government in the 2015/16 ACT Budget, and work would soon get underway.

“I’m so proud to see that Gundaroo Drive duplication tender has been awarded today and that work will soon get underway to improve access, safety and relieve congestion for Gungahlin commuters.

“Several important road upgrade projects are already underway in Gungahlin including construction of the additional southbound lane on Gungahlin Drive from north of Sandford Street through to the Barton Highway, the upgrade of the Gundaroo Drive and Barton Highway roundabout, and the first stage of the duplication of Horse Park Drive.

“The duplication of Gundaroo Drive was a key priority for me as the local Gungahlin MLA and I was proud to present a petition for it to be funded in last year’s ACT Budget, which was signed by more than 1,000 people,” said Minister Fitzharris.

“Not only will it increase road capacity, but these works will support integrated transport in our city which is integral to our Public Transport Improvement Plan.

“During these works lane closures will be required, however they will be planned for outside the usual peak period. Reduced speed limits will be in operation to ensure safety for workers and for the travelling public, and diversions will also be in place for cyclists.

“Gungahlin residents will be kept up-to-date throughout construction with electronic road signage, website information, social media posts and letterbox drops, and I thank everyone in advance for their patience while this important work gets underway,” Minister Fitzharris concluded.

The upgrade works will include on-road cycle lanes to provide safe passage for cyclists. A new signalised pedestrian crossing is also being installed midway along Gundaroo Drive between Gungahlin Drive and Mirrabei Drive.

The works will also include funding to relocate the high pressure gas main on the north side of Gundaroo Drive between Nudurr Drive and Gungahlin Drive. This is in preparation for the future duplication of this next section of Gundaroo Drive.

The total cost of the current works package is $31.1 million over two years. Works will commence in mid March 2016, following site set up by the contractors.
