Gungahlin’s newest school, the Neville Bonner Primary School, has been officially opened today by Chief Minister, Katy Gallagher and Minister for Education and Training, Joy Burch.

The Chief Minister and Minister Burch were joined members of the school community and the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community to officially open the school.

“The opening of the new Neville Bonner School is a significant milestone for the Gungahlin community and joins other state-of-the-art schools in the area including Franklin Early Childhood School and Harrison School,” the Chief Minister said.

“The $42 million school is named after the late Neville Bonner AO, the first Aboriginal Senator in Australia. His tireless journey to represent and improve conditions for Aborigines has been well documented.

“It is a great honour to be joined by Mr Bonner’s great niece Ms Kerry Lindgren and I thank her for being available to come and celebrate this important opening with us all.

“This school is an important way of recognising Neville Bonner’s significant contribution to Australia and the Canberra community and it is appropriate that the school has the first purpose built Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples Learning and Culture Centre in the ACT. “The centre is designed to provide children with essential life lessons through art as storytellers.

“I congratulate Ms Fran Dawning, the founding Principal, the Education and Training Directorate, architects and builders for this first class education facility. I wish you all the best for the ongoing development of Neville Bonner Primary School as it continues to grow and achieve,” the Chief Minister concluded.
